Big Bend National Park

There are all kinds of great reasons for photographers to visit Big Bend National Park. It could be to relish in the quiet solitude and capture the incredible vistas of southern Texas. It might even be the incredible natural diversity of the plants and wildlife that is so exciting or maybe it’s the opportunity to capture the amazing canopy of starlight and the Milky Way of this designated International Dark Sky Park. Each year on November 2 a special celebration of life and loved ones, known as “The Day of the Dead” takes place in Terlingua, Texas. We’ll be there to capture the festivities and spirit of it all.

Big Bend National Park is one of the biggest US national parks and also one of the most remote. Three incredibly diverse ecosystems make up this beautiful desert landscape. The Chisos Mountains rocky and rugged rise up like a huge island from the Chihuahuan desert. The Rio Grande River meanders along the border with Mexico and forms the southern edge of Big Bend, cutting through ancient volcanic rock to form the amazing Santa Elena Canyon. Join DJP to explore, enjoy, and photograph the best that Big Bend National Park offers!

Itinerary

Sunday-Friday | October 29 - November 3, 2023

Our Workshop begins with a welcome orientation on Sunday at 7:00pm and concludes after our group slideshow on Friday at 12:00pm.

Each day will be packed with field sessions led by Doug at the best times for shooting, daily lectures to improve your photographic skills and visual seeing, constructive critiques of participants’ images, and open labs for individual assistance. Classroom sessions are tailored to each workshop and are based on participant interests and goals for the workshop. Additional topics are designed to enhance participants’ skills for the type of shooting the location emphasizes.

Location Highlights: Explore this unique mountainous desert deep in the heart of Texas at locations such as Santa Elena Canyon, Rio Grande Overlook, Burro Mesa Overlook, Balance Rock, Ernst Tinaja Canyon, Tuff Canyon, and Sotol Vista. Depending on weather conditions, we’ll also do a night shoot to capture Big Bend’s dark skies that showcase thousands of stars!

This was an amazing adventure and learning experience. Doug is fun, funny, very attentive, extremely patient and has an infectious laugh! I learned so much and was pushed beyond my comfort zone.
